After decades of working and raising families, a bunch of retirees began showing up in Chinatown with their instruments, playing oldies for whoever happened to walk by. Before long, Feel Young were drawing groups of seniors who danced and sang along.

But without a busking licence, these moments of communal joy get cut short when the authorities show up. So we gave them a stage at the now-shuttered Spectrum by Phil Studio. For one night, an underground performance venue that hosted dozens of international bands was theirs.

The question remains: for all our talk about community spirit, why is it still so hard for people to create it on their own?
